Who am I
I was born in Wantage and fought against the Danes
Leading Anglo Saxons with freemen and with Theigns.
I wasn’t always winning. Sometimes I had to flee
With those pursuing Vikings chasing after me.
At Eddington I won the day and Guthram sued for peace
When he became a Christian it was a blessed release!
Guthram got the Danelaw and my kingdom expanded,
Half of Mercia and London, just as I demanded
I was known for scholarship and strategy in war
But ‘tis burning cakes that I’m remembered for!
