The Mystery
On our walk this morning all the swans had gone.
When we reached their nesting place, not a single swan!
We watched them just the other day getting in the lake.
The cygnets were quite tentative. Was this a mistake!
With dad and mum beside them they wouldn’t come to harm
Though they paddled slowly filled with some alarm!
While they went off paddling three eggs were left behind.
The crows had quickly gathered round to be quite unkind!
From the previous day we note there is a cygnet less
What tragedy had happened we could only guess!
When we arrived this morning the swan nest was bare
No swans, no eggs, no cygnets were seen anywhere!
We chatted with a walker and to our great delight
At the big lake’s distant end the swans had been in sight.
We walked along the lakeside to the other end
Thankful for the info from our new found friend.
There to our satisfaction we could just discern
One swan in front, four cygnets and one swan at the stern.
The cob and pen with family going round the mere
Even though their nesting place is far away from here.
I love the ways of nature though some can seem quite tough.
Four living from this cluster must surely be enough!
The sight of happy parents as they bring up their brood
Is seen in every species that much I’ve understood
