Remembrance
On a cold and wintry morning with a wind designed to chill
I stood before the monument and felt a bitter thrill.
As I heard the Last Post sounding for those who lost their lives,
In wars that took them early from their children and their wives,
I thought of all the carnage, the misery and fear
In the muddy trenches in that war of yesteryear.
As we stood in silence to commemorate the dead
Thoughts of bloody conflict were rolling round my head.
How could a nation's leaders throw away a generation?
And yet they seemed to do it with no sign of hesitation.
Who stirs up racial hatred? Who feels they have the right
To boast superiority and try to prove their might?
We've seen it throughout history this glorying in war!
Persuading every squaddie that it's worth dying for.
As the silence lengthens I'm almost in despair
For the young to lose their lives is never really fair!
Then I hear Reveille the call to rise once more
And I am full of gladness that thrills me to the core.
I know there is a better life were pain and death are gone
The fallen can partake of it while we must soldier on.
But we have a certain hope that when our lives are through
We will know the joy, my God, to live again with You.
The sadness of remembrance is moving to behold
But glorious redemption is worth much more than gold!
