Mothers

It's a special day for mothers and we make a lot of fuss
And they do deserve it for looking after us.
They fed us and they cherished us when we were very small
And sometimes they chastised us when we weren't good at all!
Through our early childhood and then into our teens
They nurtured and slaved for us as if we're kings and queens!
They always took an interest in everything we do
And they always will do for our whole life through.
We are not always good to them yet they love us still
And just the thought of seeing us gives them such a thrill.
Appreciate your mother for she loves you so
And as you love her dearly you should let her know!

Fair

Many times I've heard it said that something isn't fair.
As if they have been given something they can't bear.
Sometimes we are faced with things that we do not like
And wish that we had got the chance to get upon our bike!
When I was young my mother gave me this advice:
"Life is not a picnic. Not everything is nice.
You have to meet each challenge as it is presented
Sometimes there are nasty things that cannot be prevented.
There is no use in moaning, get on with your task
And, if you need some help from God, you only have to ask.
You'll still have the challenge but you have a friend
Who is always with you till you reach the end."
Life has got its ups and downs. Take it as it comes.
And we all should listen to lessons from our mums!

Clear Blue Sky

I awoke this morning to a lovely clear blue sky.
Playing golf beneath it had me on a high!
My golf may not be wonderful but I was full of joy.
Out in glorious days like this I am a lucky boy!
The greens were very fast today, I couldn’t sink a putt.
In fact I just was playing like the old proverbial mutt!
One of our number was on fire, we all just watched in awe.
We were rapt with wonder with the putting that we saw!
Ok, I lost the money but it couldn’t spoil my day.
The way that I was playing I’d have lost it anyway?
I gloried in the weather and just enjoyed the walk
For while we’re together we can always talk.
It’s not a religion. Golf is just a game.
And it was never going to be how I made my name!!!

Sleep

When we were small the thought of sleep appalled.
We wouldn’t go to bed when we were called!
Out of bed we’d often try to creep.
Our mums would threaten, “Not another peep!”
Of course we were bad  tempered when we tired
But still to stay awake we all aspired.
In our teens we slouched within our beds
Lots of lazy thoughts inside our heads!
As young lovers sleep was over rated
We’d wait until our appetites were sated!
As adults we were often kept awake
Pondering upon some grievous big mistake.
As parents we just needed lots of rest
With well loved kids who were sometimes a pest!
Then the worries for their lives began!
Would they find the perfect girl or man?
A brief time followed when they left the nest
When we could have some nights of peaceful rest!
Now we’re really getting on a bit
We long for dreamless sleep within our pit
But somehow every niggling ache and pain
Means we cannot get to sleep again!
We toss and turn but never quite get right
So we read a bit with bedside light.
When we are tired we’ll surely fall asleep
And we will finally enter slumbers deep?
No chance! The bathroom beckons us
And we have to go without a fuss!
Now the all night waltzing has begun
We toss and turn until the rising sun!
We just want a jolly good night’s sleep.
Every other pleasure you can keep!

Clearing out the Rubbish

We seem to have been hoarding for years and years, and years.
We could get rid of most of it without a need for tears!
Accumulated paperwork no longer any use
For leaving it unsorted, we don't have an excuse!
Clothes hang in our wardrobes that we no longer wear
And shoes no longer useful because of wear and tear!
Then there is the bric-a-brac that crams into each space
It makes the place seem cluttered. In fact it's a disgrace!
Part of our spring cleaning should be to clear it out
A little bit of discipline is what it's all about!
It's the same with attitudes that we have kept in mind
Just how many of them are the redundant kind?
We should search our conscience and get rid of prejudice.
Could it be that time in Lent should be used for this?

The Bells

I hear the bells each Sunday as I look up at the tower
Calling us to worship at the eleventh hour.
The sound is very joyful and lifts my spirits high
And as I wander in the door I give a thankful sigh.
It is a reminder of the way things used to be
And that our loving Saviour forgives our sin for free!
Of course it wasn't free for Him he suffered on the cross
And His faithful followers could not bear the loss.
But then he died and rose again on that victorious day
A beacon sent from heaven to give a glorious ray.
That light has lasted up till now o'er all the powers of hell.
And I get goose pimples every time I hear a bell.
So keep those church bells chiming it is a wondrous sound,
Which gives a boost to all of us listening on the ground.

Gifting

I have got a gifting and use it when I can.
Hopefully I use it to uplift my fellow man!
I find it pretty easy to express myself in rhyme
To write a little poem doesn't take a lot of time.
When inspiration grabs me it all seems to flow
And once I write a single line the next is on the go.
I have written with emotion, which causes me to cry.
I think they are my best ones, but that is by the by!
When I see in nature some beauty so divine
My heart just soars recording it in poetic line.
A tragedy will cause me to express in verse
My feelings of compassion or even, something worse!
I rhyme my meditations on subjects grave and deep
And if they're controversial I don't lose any sleep.
I write verses to remember those who've passed away
And others are for friends of mine on their special day.
All  show my affection for the person that I know
And if it causes laughter, they would want it so!
God gave me this gifting so I can tell a story.
If it is good, or popular, His must be the glory!

Duty

I understand my duty is something I must do.
If I agree to do a task, I must see it through!
I may crack my sinews and strain each aching joint.
It may not be a pleasure but that’s beside the point.
I should do it willingly and with a beaming smile And given opportunity should walk that extra mile.
I should sing and whistle while I’m on my way
And greet all others cheerfully on every single day!
Then I’ve done my duty to spread a little joy.
If I have given some happiness
To any girl or boy!

Farewell old Friend

I heard about his passing only yesterday
Though not unexpected I felt a need to pray.
He had his hundreth birthday a few weeks ago
It was a wondrous party and he enjoyed it so.
He was getting frailer and his mind was not so keen
In short he was not half the man he had always been.
He was now immobile and stuck in a wheelchair
So just after the party he had to go in care.
Within a week he had a stroke and went to hospital
And it was clear his illness would now be terminal.
It was in fact a blessing that he went so peacefully
For in his final days with us it was a shame to see.
So travel on your journey, your memory will last
For you achieved so many things in your glorious past.

The Cobbler

There is a little cobbler with a shop in Bletchley Town
And he’ll never, ever let his clients down.
His shop is pretty dingy with not a lot of space
But it is a pleasure to see his wizened face.
No matter what he’s doing he’ll see to you mid task.
And if you’ve got a question you only have to ask.
He looks at what you’ve brought to him with a discerning eye
And he’ll make his pronouncement on it by and by.
He’ll tell you if it’s possible and if so name a price.
He’ll also say how long it takes, which is very nice!
Generally, he’ll fix it while you walk round the shops
And if it’s really urgent he’ll pull out all the stops.
He also does engraving on trophies that you’ve won
And he’ll fix your watches when they cease to run.
There is still another thing that I have to tell
If you need a key cut, he’ll do that as well!
He keeps a stock of batteries of the button kind
And finds a way to fit them, which sometimes blows the mind!
He has never let me down for anything I’ve asked
And he does a lovely job with the things he’s tasked.
Reminds me of a craftsman in bygone days of yore,
A carpenter in Nazareth who accomplished so much more!

Magnolia Tree

The church has a magnolia just outside the door
Looking at its beauty, you couldn’t ask for more.
Its been there for ages and is a splendid sight
And it now has reached a most impressive height.
It started as a little bush but has grown and grown.
It’s the biggest of its kind that I have ever known!
In the spring and summer its glory is unfurled
As good a sight as you will see throughout all the world.
For years the church’s children have climbed among its boughs
Each child as adventurous as their mum allows!
You would think this treatment would have made it bare
But that hardy beauteous tree stands still in splendour there!
I thank my God for beauty which we can all enjoy
No matter what the ages of any girl or boy.

Daffodils

Coming from the station into Bletchley Town
There is a sight, in early March, which never lets me down.
As I get to Saxon Street, bus station on my right,
The central reservation fills me with delight.
It’s not just in the Lakelands that daffodils come through,
Their dazzling yellow colour brightens up the view.
It really lifts my spirits as I feast my eyes
But in this urban landscape it is no surprise.
Planted by the council row on row on row,
To give the local people a really splendid show.
We have got our roundabouts and concrete cows as well
But we have nature’s beauty as residents can tell.
In Milton Keynes, I tell you, such beauty is not rare
For the roadside planting is quite beyond compare.
I marvel at the colours at every time of year,
And I am contented to have my dwelling here.

Giving

We all know that giving is a thing we ought to do
And that God will bless us as we see it through.
The bible tells us plainly that God loves a cheerful giver
So it is with a thankful heart that we should deliver.
How much we give to this or that is really up to us
As long as it’s for God’s work there should not be a fuss.
We have God’s own promise that we’ll have all we need
Maybe not all that we can want, for that would be greed.
We may have heard the message many times before
But to some it may be new and therefore not a bore!
We have got a mission, which is God’s own will
And if we have got the means we will pursue it still.
Every, single, person should look within their heart
And, contribute what they can so they can play their part.
The widow’s mite is worth as much as the rich man’s gift
A willing, smiling, giver gives God’s heart a lift!
So give out of your plenty or from your meager store.
Be assured, whate’er your means God couldn’t love you more!

Revenge

I heard the news this morning
And it filled my heart with pain.
In New Zealand, terror
Has hit the world again.
Muslims were the innocents
In their mosques to pray.
Whom some vengeful cowards
Decided they would slay.
Terrorists are terrorists
No matter what their creed
They are a blot on humankind
A dreadful stain indeed.
I suspect their motives
Were all about revenge
For some Muslim outrage
They thought to avenge.
No faith condones such violence
Against the innocent
And for these ghastly doings
We should all repent.
If we spread the love of God
And practice to forgive
Think of the Utopia
In which we all could live!
So love your Muslim brothers,
As Christ would want you to.
And do not blame them for the things
That lunatics will do.

Stuck

I am quite contented. I like the things I do.
And when I start a project I like to see it through.
Sometimes I don't want to change, some say I am stuck!
To do something differently would take a lot of pluck.
It's not that I am boring or lacking any drive
It's just I'll do the things I do as long as I'm alive!
I do like innovation. I am not a bore.
I don't detest the new things. I like the old ones more.
Oh dear! I must be getting old and set within my ways
But yet I only want to sing my great redeemer's praise.
He invented new things and so I ought to see
That whether they're adopted isn't up to me!
I thank you Lord for all the things that you have created
And it is true that some old ways have been overrated!

Pebble

Drop a pebble in the water, see the ripples flow
You can see them starting but don't know where they go!
It is just the same with us no matter what we do
The results are such that we may never see them through!
So do not think that what you do has no great effect
It can do more good or harm than you might expect.
A smile can be infectious and can affect another
And they may smile on someone else a sister or a brother.
It may go on for ever and light up someone's life
Or reconcile an argument 'tween a husband and a wife.
This effect is one that we may often use to please.
A scowl, upon the other hand, can spread like a disease!
A simple act of kindness can multiply and grow
The result of what we're doing we may never know.
Little things do matter so watch the ripples spread
You do not need to chuck a rock when pebbles do instead.

Complacency

I have an easy time of it.
I do just what I please.
If I want to, I can sit
Relaxing at my ease.
I play my golf and badminton
Table, and short, tennis.
In short my troubles have all gone
And hold, for me, no menace!
I am very fortunate,
I have all that I need.
I really think my life is great.
To ask for more is greed.
I try to think of others
And help them where I can
Treating all as brothers
Among my fellow man.
Who do I think I'm kidding?
Do I do enough?
Do I do God's bidding
Or just enjoy my stuff?
For a purpose I am here
God give me grace to see
Make my mission very clear
And stop complacency!

Facade

I put on a facade for you each and every day
I can be quite charming in a calm and easy way.
You don't see the torment that disturbs my soul
Or the nasty side of me that I hide on the whole!
You do not know the thoughts and wickedness inside
Or the faults and failures I make sure I hide!
Oh, I have my good points and some virtues too
And there is some goodness in the things I do.
I guess I am no better or much worse than any man
And, when I can stir myself, I do the best I can!
But Jesus sees right through me and knows just what I am
For He has been right with me since I was in my pram.
Thank you Lord for loving me with all my evil ways
And I pray You'll be with me throughout all my days

The Road
The road I have to follow does not seem too hard
All in all it seems to me I've drawn a winning card.
I have got the blessing of not knowing what's ahead
So no apprehension about where I'm being led.
I know my Lord is with me to lift me when I fall
And when I should need Him I only have to call!
Christ was not so fortunate. He knew where he must go.
And the fate awaiting He also seemed to know.
Hence the preparation to enjoy His Father's love
And to gain the reassurance that cometh from above.
He undertook his journey on that fateful road.
Would you or I have been prepared to bear that heavy load?
Lord let me sing your praises for what you've done for me,
For it was your sacrifice, for sin, that set me free.
Inspiration
I search for inspiration to complete my Lenten task
It doesn't come as easily as one would like to ask!
It is just the same in life when we need God's advice
He sometimes makes us wait for it, which isn't very nice!
I am quite impatient as anyone can see
Sitting round and waiting is not the way for me.
Maybe that's the lesson that I am meant to get
Certainly there is no need for me to get upset.
If Christ could wait for 40 days to get the message right
I can wait five minutes before I see the light!
Contemplation
On a windy morning sitting in the sun,
With a smile upon my face, greeting everyone.
I have a mellow feeling deep within my heart
And there’s almost nothing could upset my applecart!
God is in his heaven and all’s right with the earth
It’s a time to contemplate what my life is worth.
I have a wife who loves me and meets my every need.
To ask for something extra might be considered greed!
We have raised a family of which I’m justly proud
And I can sing their praises, forever, right out loud.
I have done some good things and some that I regret
But, all in all, there is no need for me to be upset.
Where I’ve made a mess of things, I’ve tried to make amends
And I’m very lucky to have forgiving friends!
I have sufficient for my needs and do not ask for more.
And though I don’t deserve them I have blessings by the score!
I thank my God for everything that He has given to me
And I know the future is not something I can see.
I trust that God, my Saviour, has got me in his hands.
And, if asked, He’ll help me to follow his commands.

Ups and Downs

I've been with friends for coffee and a little chat
Relaxing in the clubhouse discussing this and that.
It is most convivial 'cause we've been having fun
'Twas only on the last green that the match was won.
It doesn't really matter who has won the day
We like each other's company and we love to play.
Golf is like the game of life. It has its ups and downs.
It can lead to beaming smiles but sometimes causes frowns.
Of course we try to do things right but they can go wrong
It's the same with what we do as we go along.
Of course in golf mistakes you make mean you lose the game!
You would think that in your life it would be the same.
However, we are fortunate. Christ died for all our sins.
And, when we recognise it, our new life begins.
So say a prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has done.
He loved us all so dearly he sacrificed His Son.

Solitude

To spend forty days in a dessert
 Alone and having it tough
With none of your friends beside you
Maybe you’d find it quite rough!
Yet that was the path Christ had chosen
To pray and to listen to God.
That he found it a blessing
To all of us has to seem odd!
Of course he was close to the Father
As maybe we’d all like to be
So if we’re alone and we listen
Perhaps He would bless you and me?
Father I want to be near you
Enfold me under your wing
I value your wisdom and friendship
And that way I truly will sing!

40 Acts of Kindness

Christ went in the desert for prayer and contemplation
For the task He had to face it was His preparation!
In our old traditions this has led to Lent
A time for prayer and sacrifice and also to repent.
Some mark this time of 40 days by giving up a vice
Like giving up their chocolate or something else that's nice!
There is nothing wrong with that, it can lead to thought
And praying for the wisdom to do things as one ought.
I for several years now have penned an ode each day
To mark this special season in my special way.
I pray about the subjects that I should put in rhyme
If it makes me, and others, think 'tis good use of my time.
I heard today of others who take a different line
And it struck me forcibly that their way was fine.
They set out in this season on every single day
To do an act of kindness as they go on their way.
40 acts of kindness will bless the lives of others
And fulfills our Lord's command to treat all men as brothers.
I pray throughout this season and all that I can ask
Is that the Lord equips us to perform our chosen task.
