You know I am a Christian and my faith is strong
And throughout my struggles it has been all along.
When I was at my lowest ebb and feeling very stressed,
Just to put it bluntly, I was clinically depressed,
Though I did not feel it, God was at my side
But I did not ask for help. After all I had my pride!
I took a break one weekend when feeling stressed at work
Although I felt like giving up I felt I could not shirk!
I went for a cruising weekend, on a sailing boat
It was called the Morning Star of Revelation, note!
We got stranded on a sandbar just after high tide came
So we were going nowhere and no one was to blame!
We had hours to sit and wait, not sailing anywhere
And half the crew were moaning and saying, “It’s not fair!
We came to do some sailing not sit around for hours
In fact when we can move again, we’ll be counting stars!”
The sun was shining brightly and the thought that came to me
Was all I had to do was wait and then I would be free!
A cheerful voice within my brain just whispered soft and low
“I’ve been trying to tell you that. So maybe now you’ll know.
All you have to do is wait and then you will be free
I am always with you and you can trust in me!”
My stress it vanished straight away and my mind was clear
As long as God was with me I had naught to fear!
Some lessons need repeating and a few years after
I was feeling useless and with no thought of laughter.
I went to church one evening to sulk and rant at God
And, how I was then feeling, that did not seem odd!
I sat away from everyone so I’d be on my own
To revel in my misery and have a good old moan!
Two friends then came and sat with me and I had to chat.
Of course I was resentful, God – I hadn’t wanted that!
Then another female friend sat at my other side
Just when all I wanted was to run away and hide!
I felt that this was just not fair. I want to be alone
And now in just two minutes my solitude was blown!
By now I’m really angry but trying to be polite
Even though I’m miserable I should treat people right!
I almost heard a snigger in the corner of my brain
And the thought occurred to me, “God’s having fun again!”
We went up for communion and my lady friend’s in tears.
Her husband travels every week and he has done for years.
It seems that she resents it when it’s time for him to go
And then she starts to moan at him though she loves him so.
She’s feeling very guilty that she’s such a harridan
And if she carries on like this she might just lose her man!
I listened to her worries about her other half
I cajoled her and I teased her and finally made her laugh.
She went off quite happy and there, within my brain
I could hear the merry sound of laughter once again.
“Did you just say you’re useless? Well, look what you have done!
You’ve brightened up another’s life. You have done well, my son.
You should just remember that I made you what you are
And I will always see you bright shining like a star.”
Thank you God for loving me and walking at my side
And, indeed, ignoring all my foolish pride!
