Youth

Some people in my age group forget their teenage years

Or maybe they are stricken by the latest media fears!
One thing is for certain we were just the same
And for the state the world is in, we’re the ones to blame
Do they not remember when they were in their teens
With their raging hormones and what rebellion means:
The agony of first romance and all those sleepless nights
And when they were first tempted by some adult delights?
Do they not recall the times when they would meet in groups
And speak together loudly with lots of raucous whoops?
We had our own loud music and tried forbidden things
As we were escaping from our parents’ leading strings!
Can we not remember when we had the confidence
To try to put the world to rights, not sit upon the fence?
I see the youth within our church fired up to do good deeds
And fight the old establishment to meet the third world’s needs.
Sure they muck about as well and have a lot of fun
But they’re the future of the world when all is said and done!
And given the complexity of modern life’s demands
The future of our planet is safe within their hands.
I thank God for their fervour and their need to do what’s right
And that they will follow our Saviour’s guiding light.
