Bible Quotation
When people quote the bible to prove their point of view
I have severe misgivings for what they try to do!
They seem to think such quoting brooks no argument
And any other point of view they surely will resent!
“You cannot be a Christian if you disagree.
For it’s in the bible – there for all to see!”
Their interpretation is all they will allow.
They can quote it word for word, for it’s their sacred cow.
I’ve never met a charlatan who could not quote a verse
To try to con his audience, or maybe,
something worse.
Slavery was sanctioned, with reference to the book
And to the shame of Christians that was the stance they
took.
Christians found quotations to send them on Crusade
And look at all the problems in our world this made!
If you quote Leviticus to feed your prejudice
Do you really think my Lord was sent to earth for this?
Forget what you may think the bible says is right or wrong
Consider if our Saviour might sing a different song?
I love the bible stories reading front to back
So do not think that this might be a scurrilous attack.
The bible tells a story of how God’s people’s views evolved
And with Christ’s appearance most puzzles were resolved.
But God did not stop speaking when John wrote Revelation
We have his Holy Spirit to help with our translation.
So read your bible prayerfully and find, within your heart,
The answers that are needed so you may do your part.
Don’t use it as a weapon to condemn another soul
Don’t just pick and choose from it, treat it as a whole!
Jesus told us not to judge for this was not our task
And to follow this instruction is not a lot to ask.
