When I see my grandson in his parent’s arms,
Lovingly caressing and protecting him from harms,
I remember well the feeling of when my kids were small
When I, and their mother, would answer every call.
It didn’t really matter that we had had no sleep
For our parental love for them ran so very deep.
Sure, the mess and drudgery were no great delight
And you dreamed of sleeping more than half a night!
But the joy of seeing that first enchanting smile
Overcame the tiredness. Trumped it by a mile!
Then the first real active hug responding to your cuddle
That filled your heart with loving and left you in a muddle.
The crawling, walking, talking that filled your heart with pride
Their growing independence with the terror you must hide!
Then the loving discipline to teach them right from wrong.
The need to thwart their dangerous acts as they went along.
Letting them go off to school, releasing apron strings.
Watching as they learned to fly with newly unfurled wings.
Finally they leave the nest and you must let them go
Hoping that the love you’ve shown they will always know.
You see their every high and low and help them when you may
And take great joy in what they do as they go on their way.
It is just like this for God. He knew us from before our birth
And loves us as His children with a love that proves it’s worth.
He lets us leave His nursery and lets us make our choice
But when we desire it we will always hear His voice.
He wants us all to love him and choose the proper path
And when we stray He’ll help us with the aftermath.
He is our loving father in the heavens above
And if we should let Him, He’ll shower us with His love.
