Depression

Depression is an illness which strikes at everyone
And, if you’ve ever been there, you know it isn’t fun!
Its symptoms may be hidden beneath a beaming smile
And if someone detects it you want to run a mile.
You see it as a weakness of which you are ashamed.
But I have to tell you, you cannot be blamed!
No one can really help you except by being there
To listen to your misery and your deep despair.
They do not need to say a word, just be there for you
Until the mood is over that’s all that they can do.
If you are religious you can surely pray
And ask your God, in mercy, to take the beast away.
He is always with you to listen to your woe
And has the power to cure you. This I truly know.
For I have felt depression pulling me apart
And my wife beside me who held me in her heart.
My God was also with me and held me by the hand
And through all my misery they would understand.
Finally, my confidence was given a new birth
For they engendered feelings of renewed self worth!
So ignore the trite advice of “pull yourself together”
With love all around you, this passing storm you’ll weather.
