The Lost Ring
There once was a ring made of silver,
Though worn, it shone ever bright.
It sat every day on her finger
It was truly the girl’s great delight.
It was given to her as a treasure
When she was but sixteen years old.
It’s cost was not beyond measure
But to her it was worth more than gold.
It was bought for her by her mother
When the family budget was small.
She wouldn’t swap it for another
It made her feel forty foot tall!
A gift that is given in love
Has more value than any can tell
One feels one’s in heaven above
And will always look after it well!
It sat fifty years on her finger
Each morning she wore it with pride
Her thoughts on her mother would linger
Long after that lady had died!
Then one day came disaster!
She noticed that it wasn’t there!
With face like white alabaster
She frantically searched everywhere!
We had gone on a visit
Down to Bexhill on Sea
She asked herself, “Where is it?”
And wondered where it could be.
We looked all over the car park
In the gutters and in our friend’s flat.
And searched until it was dark
And then we thought, that was that!
We went there again two months after,
And searched around there once more,
And so you know we got dafter
We even searched on the shore!
No use! We finally realised
Her precious possession was gone
No matter how much we had theorised
Life would just have to go on!
We finally made a decision
And ordered a ring made to fit
Although it would have great precision
We knew it could not replace “It”
Just before we collected
The new ring so shiny and round
There came a twist unexpected
That old ring, so precious, was found!
Not by our friend down in Bexhill
But by Susan herself, quite by chance,
She waved round her arms like a windmill
And invented a new kind of dance!
We’ve all heard the tale of the shepherd
Who rejoiced when his lost sheep appeared?
Well believe me, I cried and my eyes blurred
When her ring was not lost, as I feared.
This is a wonderful story
Of not giving up till you find
That Jesus lives in his glory
And sadness is all in the mind!
