Amazing Grace

I went on a pilgrimage to Olney yesterday
To celebrate John Newton in a very special way.
It was two-forty years since his hymnal first appeared,
“Amazing Grace”its special song on which all were reared.
Newton was a slaver, until he saw the light
Then fought for abolition with all his worldly might.
Leaving dreadful past behind he then became a priest
Serving those in Olney from the greatest to the least.
He and William Cowper each wrote songs of praise
Collected in the hymnal over many days.
Since this work was published “Amazing Grace” has been
The greatest hymn for singing the world has ever seen.
Sung in every language and over all the world
Leading all to heavenly grace. Christ’s standard thus unfurled.
I thank my Lord for Newton and for this wondrous song
Which through each generation we can sing along!
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me”
The words record the victory that Christ has won for me!
